Location map of  Varna

The Varna city spreads over an area of 205 km. along the semi- circular Varna Bay and the two waterways connecting the bay and the Varna Lake are joined by the Asparuhov Bridge. The city is some 470 km. north- east of Sofia, 45 km. from Dobrich, 80 km. from Shumen and 125 km. south- west of Bourgas. The city location has revealed some remarkable archeological finds, attesting to the location’s thousand year old history and prehistoric settlements during the Eneolithic period. The oldest European cultivated gold was found in the city referred to as “Varna Gold Treasures”. It dates, according to specialists, back to 5000 years ago. Later on, antique Tharcian villages thrived in this area and in 6 B.C. Later on, Greek colonizers built the town known as Odessos. It soon became a major commercial, economic and political centre and combined the Hellenic traditions with the Tharcian way of life.

The history and life of the city continues through the Byzantine Empire and the location’s rich and diverse history has influenced the modern day city that now exists. Although very little of ancient architecture exists because the city was rebuilt during the late 1800s and 1900s, undoubtedly history has largely shaped and molded the city into what it is today. The contemporary city of Varna is a thriving socio- economic force and benefits from up to par infrastructure. In addition to the all year round International airport, the city can be easily reached by car, bus, train or mini buses. The major roads include European routes E70 to Bucharest, E87 to Istanbul and Romania, national Hemus motorway, to Sofia and Cherno More motorway to Bourgas. The central bus depot in Varna is centrally situated and provides regular buses not only within the city, but to the majority of cities and villages in the country and abroad. The railway station too has domestic and some international trains to nearby countries like Romania.
